Was (Is) Jesus’ Mom a Virgin?

This Wednesday we will discuss Mary (Jesus’ Mom), her life, and her significance in the Biblical story. What was God’s purpose for this woman? Was she a virgin when Jesus was born? What support is there for this belief? What are the difficulties in this understanding? What did the early church (first 1500 years) believe about Mary? Do we agree?

Come ready with questions to the Hall’s at 6:00.

We will be going from Mark Driscoll’s notes from which he preached last Christmas.

Why did Jesus come to the Earth?

Last night we looked at the three roles Jesus took while on the Earth and continues today. Jesus was a prophet, a priest, and a king.

Prophet – Jesus teaches, convicts of sin, pointing out our errors from His truth, and tells us what He will do when He returns.

Priest – Jesus through His death (paying our ransom) mediates between us and God, providing mercy and compassion

King – Jesus has all authority and will always have supreme authority over His kingdom (John 18 with Pilate) whether we recognize Him or not. His kingdom is not limited to physical or spiritual, realized or unrealized, etc

To conclude we shared some of those realities in our own lives. If you weren’t there or you’d like to review the notes. Mark Driscoll teaches here with notes here.

My favorite quote was Paul’s correction of “letting Jesus be Lord of your life” to “Jesus is Lord” whether or not we recognize Him as such.

How did people know Jesus was coming?

In the discussion of “How did people know Jesus was coming?”, we again turn to the Old Testament. A look at the Scriptures written hundreds of years before God came to Earth as Jesus. We looked at 25 reasons why Jesus should have been expected.

Of the 25 reasons my favorite passage comes from Psalm 22 where specific imagery of Jesus’ crucifixion is portrayed 1000 years beforehand and couple years before death by crucifixion was invented by the Persians. After this horrific display, Ps 22 continues in rejoicing in verses 25-31.

25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows.
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the LORD will praise him— may your hearts live forever!
27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,
28 for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations.
29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him— those who cannot keep themselves alive.
30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.
31 They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn— for he has done it.

More about Jesus

I’ve missed updated this blog for the past two weeks.  So the next couple of posts will contain the discussion from those weeks: How did people know Jesus was coming? and Why did Jesus come to Earth?

We’ve had some pretty exciting weeks with the Hammonds moving, folks traveling, Ron joining us last night (and telling us of his travels), and missing the Mcs on Sunday.  You should have seen Bob at the Olive Garden on Sunday.  I think we may need to take up a collection to get Bob a cheese grader for Christmas.  We had a great time enjoying post-church fellowship.  Wilder tried to visit everyone.  And we found out that the pasta bowls really do not end (I recommend the pepper and sausage).

We look forward to gathering again next Wednesday at the Hall’s again.  I’ll be updating our calendar and posting our events soon.

What makes Jesus Superior to other saviors?

When Googling the word “savior” the first two images (in order) are:

Savior - 1 Savior - 2

This Wednesday we will be at the Sylvester’s (my) house again. I greatly appreciate everyone’s input and discussion last week in our talk about the worship of Jesus. We concluded (from Scripture) that the worship of Jesus is not limited to a time or place but rather the glorification of Jesus. Jesus is our prime example of how to worship God and He demonstrates for us in the perfect trinity.

This week we will be talking about the effects of our Savior, Jesus the Christ. To get your mind thinking – what cultural demonstrations do we see for a worldly savior? What do they tell us they will save us from? Here are the notes, mp3, and video for this week as presented by Pastor Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, WA.

FYI, I recently heard that Mark Driscoll is putting this Vintage Jesus series together in a book that is supposed to be out in January February. If I hear otherwise, I’ll be sure to correct this post. Per Driscoll, ” Saturday I edited the final manuscript for Vintage Jesus which is a book coming out with Crossway in February”

Do you Yoga?

In talking about the worship of Jesus this week, view this video of a discussion between John McArthur and Doug Pagitt. Doug Pagitt is a member of the Emergent Village. John McArthur has great disdain for the theology of the Emergent Village. Please do not make a decision about the men on this video, but do view their answer in regarding a Christian’s perspective on Yoga as a health and/or mental practice.
